Although
our economy continues to surge and is still one of the fastest growing
economies in Asia last year with a GDP of 7%, the Philippine Stock Exchange
(PSE) closed the year 2013, with a gain of only 1.33%, finishing with 5,889,
after a high of 7,392 in the early part of the year due mainly to the selloff
in May, where majority of the foreign funds took profits and shifted their
investments to developed markets. As of March 20, 2014, the PSE index closed at
6,417.35 after the US Federal Reserve announced that it could end its
bond-buying program this fall and could start raising interest rates as early
as 2015, analyst said.
The
following factors contributed to the country’s economic growth: The
liberalization of foreign direct investments (FDI), the success of business
process outsourcing (BPO) and remittances from overseas Filipino workers
(OFWs). The liberalization of FDI has led to an increase in the country’s industrial
exports that led to the opening of export processing zones where foreign
enterprises can increasingly participate. In its Outlook 2013 report, the Asian
Development Bank (ADB) highlighted the Philippines’ “economic renaissance” and
cited booming investment and consumption as the main drivers of its economy’s
robust growth. The ADB forecasts GDP of 6.1% growth for 2014.
For
stock picks, citing consumption sector as one of the main economic drivers, issues
of Puregold, Universal Robina, and Jollibee are preferred. Power issues are
also good stocks considering that a number of projects will start coming in,
and power will always be needed, such as Aboitiz
Equity, and DMCI. The property
sectors are expected to do well, especially with strong brands, such as SM Prime, Ayala Land, Megaworld, and Filinvest Land.
No
doubt, solid and established companies, those with long track record of
profitability and leadership excellence are good choices. These are conglomerates
(holding companies) or called as “Blue chip” stock, are stock of an established
company of substantial size with stable earnings and relatively little risk compared
to other stock choices, like SM
Investments Corp., Ayala Corp., JG Summit, Alliance Global Group, and LT Group. PLDT is a preferred issue because of high potential dividends and
dominates the telecommunications sector.
Typhoon
Yolanda would not have a significant dent on the economy. Instead,
rehabilitation efforts would have a huge boosts on infrastructure spending and
boost construction stocks, namely: Megawide,
EEI and Holcim Phils. Banks, Gaming
and Leisure stocks are seen to have limited growth. Other choice stocks are port
operator International Container Terminal
Services (ICTS), and Semirara Mining,
the largest coal producer of our country.
About
less than 1% of the Philippine population estimated to have stocks in their
name due to a lack of understanding of what the stock market is. Filipinos are
encouraged to educate themselves if they want to do well in the equities market
through reading personal finance and investment books.
Here
is our list for the biggest publicly-listed stocks in the Philippines as of
March 20, 2014, together the company’s market capitalization, and stock prices.
The main groups of the PSEi consist of 16 sectors, as shown below.
